Wrap Up

A bit of regency and a bit of chess: January 2021 Wrap Up!

Is it just me, or was this a really long month? I feel like years have passed since the New Year’s Day.

My GR reading goal for this year is 50 books and I started out pretty well – the challenge currently says ‘2 books ahead of schedule’, so I’m doing better than last year.

Books read in January:

Most of my January reading was inspired by me watching Bridgerton, super fun show that everyone has been obsessing over. I was not about to wait for the next season to find out what happens next, so I read the first five books in the series. And now I’m on a break. I like Regency, the books were fun enough but not that great and I needed a break.

I read The Queen’s Gambit, after watching my new favorite show The Queen’s Gambit. It’s one of those rare cases where I prefer the adaptation. I enjoyed the book a lot, but the show is perfect.

As with many other people, this show has revived my love for chess, so now I’m playing again and discovering so many new things along the way. I spent the last weekend obsessing over the final rounds of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament – it made me more excited than any other sport I’ve ever watched. (Not happy with the result though – I was rooting for Anish Giri)

I read one of my all time favorites again: The Secret History. It’s so beautifully written and so fucked up (my favorite combination). “I suppose at one time in my life I might have had any number of stories, but now there is no other. This is the only story I will ever be able to tell.” I’ll never get tired of it.

After 2 years (or was it more?) of waiting, the second season of A Discovery of Witches finally arrived! …and it took me 2 weeks to get through the whole thing. Sadly it dragged on, and made an interesting story pretty boring. Before watching I was really excited about the time travel and the historical parts of the story but I ended up enjoying the modern parts more. I guess I’m over Matthew and Diana. Now I prefer Marcus and Phoebe.

I’m also watching WandaVision and trying hard to avoid the spoilers that seem to be leaking all over the place. I’m really happy about all the Marvel content that’s gonna happen this year, after last year’s drought.

Now the most important question is what to read next? I’m having an urge to reread a childhood favorite – 20000 Leagues Under the Sea. I admit I have a bit of a fear when it comes to rereading old favorites – occasionally they don’t live up to the memory. Oh well, I think I’m gonna risk it 😀
