Music Inspired by Fantasy Books

Fantasy literature has inspired plenty of music, and even though my own knowledge of it is mostly limited to the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter music, I’m still making a post to share a few of my favorites.

I love Tom Bombadil. He’s so strange and so fun to read about. I don’t know much Nickel Creek music (and I only really know about them because of the Punch Brothers connection) but I love this song.

The Hobbit movies are not exactly loved among the fans – I personally enjoyed watching them, but I never rewatched them, which is very different from my experience with the LOTR movies. But I absolutely love this song and video.

Only one more LOTR song! I can’t say I love this one, it’s more like I’m still a bit baffled that this exists. It’s Spock singing about Bilbo… It’s weird.

Back when Hogwarts still felt like home, I had a phase of wizard rock – a genre dedicated to Harry Potter songs. This is one of the rare ones that I remember and it’s sung by Hank Green, the author of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, whose sequel I STILL haven’t read.

Inspired by the books, but aimed at the writer… The writers of course don’t owe us anything, but I’m sure many readers have at some point wished for certain writers to write just a bit faster. And hopefully write a better ending.

And sometimes writers attack back.

  1. I love I See Fire. And discovered ‘Harry and the Potters’ by accident over lock-down when I was trying to get my Alexa to play film soundtracks – some good songs to be fair!

    1. I know that there are heavy metal songs based on LOTR, but it’s one of genres that I know pretty much nothing about… I might give it a try though 😀

      1. Well if you want to give it a try, two places that could be starting points is Nightwish’s Elvenpath – which just kinda riffs on fantasy in general – and Blue Oyster Cult’s Veteran of the Psychic Wars, based on Moorcock’s books

        1. Thank you! A long time ago, back in high school, I liked some songs by Nightwish but I never heard this one. And I’ll check out Blue Oyster Cult – all I know about them right now is their name.
